Oh well, I’ve been wanting to publish these sketches for a while now, but I was playing my PlayStation 2 too busy.
About 3-4 years ago, I had the idea of creating a very, very small sketchbook that would fit in the pocket of my jeans so I could carry it with me everywhere I went. In fact, I tried to order at the store, without success. So I’d cut the paper with a stylus and a ruler. That’s the reason why most pages are crooked, heheh. For the cover, I created an abstract art over a page of newspaper, following a series that I exhibited in December of 2005. But it wasn’t pleasing me, so I covered it with black acrylic paint!
Like many other notebooks that I have, it remained almost unused until the first semester of 2007, when I attended a class back at EBA-UFMG, at which I used to draw a lot, since the teachers lessons wasn’t enough to capture 100% of my attention (in some cases, I tend to pay more attention while I’m drawing than when I’m not). That was enough to fill the little sketchbook and many pages from another big one, which I’ll show in the future.
Above are the sketches that I liked the most.
The first and second were drawn after some images of magazines. Many people back at college criticized drawing after photographs, but I really like doing so, which doesn’t mean that I don’t like drawing from life, but it’s hard to find someone to pose! The first one is a model using paper clothes made by Jum Nakao, a cool brazilian stylist. I like to see fashion photography; hope to use it as reference for some future projects, including Nakao’s work. His “Playmobil helmets” are awesome!
The third is a study for a proposal for the cover of the debut album of my cousin’s band, Plug Luminário. I was intending to create some B&W art that resembled one of those reference manuals that come with electronics, but the project was rejected. I think I’ll try to create some illustration from this concept later.
Now, the fourth and fifth are sketches based on one of my comics projects. Ideas for comics is what I use to draw at my sketchbooks mostly, but I rarely took time to experiment drawing pages. After attending to this year’s FIQ, I’ve felt that I should work more seriously on these projects. For this reason, I’ve been spending a lot of time reading and researching to write a script lately. Soon, I hope to have something to show here. Stay tuned!
Sixth and seventh are studies for woodcarving works (I was doing woodcarving classes back then). All the projects for those classes were anthro images, one of my favorite themes for drawing.
Finally, the eighth is a comics-related study also. And it features another of my favorite themes: robots! I really like that one. I did another sketch of mechas at this sketchbook, but it wouldn’t fit at the scanner, getting too distorted. This sketch was later developed into an illustration.
This is my favorite sketchbook until now.
But there’s a lot more still to come, that’s for sure!
Thanks for reading this!
